Will alcohol stored in a Mason glass jar under refrigeration grow bacteria?
I'm storing left over vodka in a glass jar in a refrigerator. Will it last for a long time? Any better suggestions?
Vodka is pretty much immune to everything. The only alcohol you need to worry about growing things are mixes that contain lots of sugar, or wine which can grow bacteria but is more likely to sour (eventually becoming vinegar). Alcohol itself is antibacterial, which is why it is used in hand sanitizer-fermenting food into drink is the primary way that water was made safe to drink in times past, as it killed harmful bacteria and microorganisms living in the water.
I've always heard you should store vodka in the freezer, not to extend its life, but to make it taste better (because it really does taste better as cold as it can get). Don't worry, it won't freeze, and because of that it can be stored in a glass bottle in your freezer. You can also leave it in a glass bottle on your shelf, outside the fridge.
Keep it covered tightly, to avoid evaporation.
Avoid keeping alcohol in plastic containers, more corrosive kinds can eat away at the plastic.
