Can spiders actually shoot their webs?
I'm dead serious. On my back porch, we have the hanging chandelier thing with candles in it, and then about 5 feet away, we have this big chest thing. My question is, HOW does the spider always make a web going from the chandelier, to the chest.... It is far enough that it can't like "jump" or something. People always say the spin their web from behind them. But if so, what are they walking on to spin it behind them... If that last bit makes any sense... PLEASE ANSWER THIS QUESTION
For the most part, No. They can however 'pull' web from spinnerets
that can catch even the slightest breeze, and fix where it lands.
(even tree to tree) once they have a 'scaffold', they can build
very elaborate webs on these.
There are several species that have silk glands on their tarsus (feet)
That aid in construction.
Spiderlings of many garden spiders will extract enough web as to
create a 'kite' that can carry them great distances and altitude.
(called ballooning)
