What is the best type of adhesive or cement for applying beads or metal charms to glass?
I have some stones with a flat surface that I would like to adhere to some glass as well as a flat back metal charm. I would like to decorate ceramic, glass mugs or votive glasses for my friends bridal shower. I do not want to have to worry about the items falling of if it is washed or used for a votive candle. I also want something non toxic. What is the best type of cement or adhesive to use?
First of all it is silicone, not silicon.
Second E6000 IS silicone and is stiffer when set than 100% silicone adhesive sold in hardware stores for caulk and adhesive.
When silicone adhesives are set, they are non-toxic.
E6000 is self-leveling (a bit soupy) the GOOP glues are made by the same company but stand up a bit more and stink less. I use GOOP Craft for things like this. Some people make a small puddle of E6000 and dip the pieces in. E6000 will give a thinner joint with less hassle.
Both E6000 and GOOP are labeled as contact adhesives, which means if you apply some, push parts together, take them apart for 20 seconds and push together again, they will not move on their own and you will have trouble shifting them. You can clean squeezeout during the 20 seconds. You can also use them like other glues - apply and push together, but you may have to tape pieces or put flat to keep from sliding.

Yaley Metal Mold Votive w/ Wick 1 7/8x 1 1/2 $4.39 For metal molds the zinc core metal wick is recommended. From the underside of the mold insert the wick, thread through until it reaches the top. Secure wick to dowel across the top, then pull tight and use retainer screw to secure at the bottom. Cut the wick 1" from the screw, wind the end counterclockwise under the head and tighten, secure with mold sealer to prevent seepage. Wax should be heated to 210 deg.F. Votive w/ Wick 1 7/8"x 1 1/2"- Use with caution as metal molds have sharp edges. These candles will have approximately 15 hours of burn time when burned in a votive container. |
