Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jr. is now a retired NBA superstar who played for the Los
Angeles Lakers and took the team to win a total of five championships during the
1980's. Johnson was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Lakers and
signed for $500,000 a year; the highest rookie contract ever up to that point. The
Lakers reached the 1980 NBA Finals where they faced the Philadelphia 76's. In Game 6,
Magic scored 42 points, 15 rebounds, 7 assists and three steals. He also played three
different positions during the game; guard, forward and center giving the Lakers a
123-107 win. Johnson was awarded the NBA Finals MVP award, and his performance was
considered one of the finest plays ever. Johnson led the Lakers to the 1985 NBA Finals
where they defeated the Celtics and his record breaking performance which was the
highlight of his career.
Johnson retired in 1991 after his announcement that he had contracted HIV, later to
return to win the MVP of the 1992 All-Star Game. Due to protests of his fellow players,
he was forced to retire for the second time, but later returned in 1996 to play for the
Lakers. Johnson was considered one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history and
inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. Johnson's career achievements
include five NBA Championships, three MVP Awards, and three Finals MVP Awards. He also
played in 12 All-Star Games and nine NBA Finals. He is the NBA's all time leader in
assists per game, was a member of the Dream Team- winning the Olympic Gold medal in
1992.

B'z are back on top. Actually, they never left it since getting there in the `80s. Magic is a sound reminder that the commercial J-rock scene, for all its vibrancy, has its undisputed heavyweight champions. For this album, the band decided to embrace hard rock again -- guitarist Tak Matsumoto spent time playing with guys from Mr. Big in the 2000s, and it doesn't take a degree in music to catch a similar vibe from tracks like "Mayday!," led by powerful, convincing riffs. However, there's always more to a B'z album than just stylistic exercises, and the guys never forget that they are a pop band at heart: J-rock usually has trouble with catchy tunes, but there are some really good pieces on Magic, and whatever doesn't stick to mind on the first (well, maybe the second) listen still strokes the soul the right way. This is a very upbeat album, not shy of using brass to underscore the emotional message, but the guitars never lose the groove -- Matsumoto shows again that he's the top guitar master in Asia, not because he does fretboard histrionics, but because he's got a great sense of riff. The combination of happy-go-lucky moods and hard rock aesthetics could've ended up sounding like hair metal, but instead, Magic encroaches on the much more interesting visual kei turf -- it's easy to make a safe guess about whose posters L'Arc-n-Ciel had on their bedroom walls in their teens. The record isn't very hip or sophisticated -- it's hard to imagine B'z playing their stuff alongside A Place to Bury Strangers -- but it doesn't sound dated, either; it's just good. ~ Alexey Eremenko
