Expressing Interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc?
Hi, I am a student at the top HBCU and I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of my life I have been told to be discreet and to not tell anyone that you want to join. At my school, the Members want you to set up a meeting with them and express interest formally. Should I do this? Or is this a bad idea?
I assume that since you said you are "a student at the top HBCU," you must be at Hampton!!!!! Any place else is only second best. 
What the members are asking you to do TOTALLY violates our current procedure for membership intake and is inappropiate activity...and they know it! No matter how innocent it seems, it's hazing!
In fact, the Sorority's website states "MIP [Membership Intake Process] activities in the name of the Sorority prior to Rush are prohibited." The Rush is where you will formally make your desire for membership known, not in privately orchestrated meetings!
The Undergraduate Membership Interest form states, "Hazing may include, but is not limited to: attending unauthorized rush meetings or sessions; removing garments; eating or drinking anything given to you as a requirement for membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; or being subjected to any form of verbal, physical, or mental harassment or intimidation. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated's requirement is that those interested in membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, will support our policy against hazing, harassment and/or humiliation of any kind."
As such, if you are truly interested in being a part of our great sisterhood, it is your responsibility to DO THE RIGHT THING even if it's unpopular. You need to report what has happened to you to the chapter's Graduate Advisor and Regional Director immediately.
