How do I get the candle residue out of used candle holders and glass votives?

I picked up some free candles yesterday and some have been pretty used. My husband thought it would be good to make my own candles with some of the holders, but how do I get the residue out of the used candles to make them look new?

I make candles, tarts, and soap.
To get residue for a glass or plastic container that had wax from a candle in it you will need a mold release. You should be able to buy this from a craft supply store. You might try Wal-Mart, but I got mine from Michael's in the candle section.
I don't recommend, but I have used WD-40 too, but wash it out after you have removed the wax with hot soapy water. WD-40 is Flammable.
